The Real Erin Brockovich

I've seen the movie Erin Brockovich many times, and thought I knew all about her. But I learned a lot more about this woman recently, while listening to her audiobook Superman's Not Coming. And I also watched a few videos, and whoah... now I really got it, why she was so critical in bringing PG&E to their knees.

There's a scene in Erin Brockovich where Erin (basically) shows she can remember the phone numbers of many (if not all) of the plaintiffs in the PG&E lawsuit. I don't doubt this is a smart woman who has called these people so many times, she probably did have a few of those numbers memorized. But I thought maybe her ability to recall random numbers was a bit of a Hollywood exaggeration.

But as it turns out, Erin really does have a real photographic memory. And it clearly served her (and the company she worked for) well in the lawsuit against PG&E.

Erin Brockovich's efforts to protect everyday people from Big Polluters is a great reminder to the rest of us that there's a lot of work to do. And there's a lot we can all do, to pitch in and help.
